Choosing the right bed for a dog who loves to burrow

Some dogs sprawl, some dogs dig in and disappear. Here is how to pick a bed that matches how your dog actually sleeps.

Watch your dog settle for the night and you will learn everything you need to know about the bed they want. Burrowers paw at blankets and circle before dropping. Sprawlers flop flat and take up the whole couch. The right bed works with that instinct instead of against it.

Bolstered rims for chin-resters

A raised, bolstered rim gives anxious or older dogs something to rest their chin on, which many find calming. It also traps a little warmth, which is why burrowers gravitate to them. Look for a deep fill that does not flatten after a week.

Washable covers are not optional

Dogs bring the outdoors in. A removable, machine-washable cover is the difference between a bed that lasts years and one you bin by winter. Non-slip bases matter too, especially on tiles and floorboards.

Size up, then size up again

Measure your dog nose to tail while they are stretched out, then add room. A bed that feels a touch big to you usually feels just right to them.
