Treat training that actually sticks
8 April 2026 · 3 min read
Timing, size, and consistency beat quantity every time. A simple approach to treats that build good habits.
Treats are not bribes. Used well, they are how you tell your dog, clearly and instantly, that they got it right. The mechanics matter more than the biscuit.
Small and fast
Break treats into pea-sized pieces so your dog can eat and refocus in seconds. A reward that takes a minute to chew breaks the rhythm of a training session.
Reward within two seconds
The window between the behaviour and the reward is short. Mark the moment (a word or a click) and deliver the treat fast, so your dog connects the two.
Fade them out gradually
Once a behaviour is solid, reward it every second or third time rather than every time. The habit holds, and you are not carrying a pocket full of biscuits forever.
